No two minds ever come together without
thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force,
which may be likened to a third mind.
-Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich
Eighty years ago, author Napoleon Hill first unveiled his notion of the “mastermind group” in what would become his classic Think and Grow Rich. His mastermind concept continues to empower business professionals all across the globe, and, in my experience, I've found that entrepreneurial lawyers draw incredible benefit by belonging to one of these groups.
What Is a Mastermind Group?
A mastermind group is a collective of likeminded individuals who regularly come together for the purpose of mutual encouragement, collaboration and furthering of shared interests.
This type of community provides an excellent space to receive advice from peers, opportunities to collaborate and form joint ventures-and, importantly, no one has to feel like they are “going it alone.” Many professionals see their mastermind group as their “secret weapon,” a way to tap into a pool of wisdom far greater than the sum of its parts.
How You Can Benefit from a Mastermind
As an entrepreneurial attorney, you have much to gain by joining a mastermind group. Just a few of the advantages include:
- Connectedness and collaboration. Many entrepreneurial lawyers are “solopreneurs” building a business alone. When big firm attorneys can ask each another for substantive input, a mastermind group can fill this void for the solo.
- Peer-to-peer mentoring. Got a dicey problem and need some advice? Someone in your group has gone through the same thing and has found a solution.
- Learn from others' mistakes. When lawyers and other entrepreneurs compare notes, no one has to “reinvent the wheel.”
- Cross-promotion and networking. Referrals and mutual promotion play a huge role in mastermind groups, especially when the members concentrate on different niche markets. Their networks become your network, and vice-versa.
I so believe in the power of mastermind groups for attorneys that I've set up one of my own: The Partners Club. The Partners Club has been specifically designed for entrepreneurial attorneys like you-attorneys who want to expand their reach through marketing and sales.
